Onam ओणम
Dedicated to Vishnu (Vamana)
About Onam
Onam is Kerala's grandest festival, a 10-day harvest celebration marking the homecoming of the mythical King Mahabali. According to legend, Mahabali was a benevolent Asura king whose reign brought such prosperity that even the gods grew envious. Lord Vishnu, in his Vamana avatar, pushed Mahabali to the netherworld but granted him permission to visit his people once a year. Onam celebrates this annual return. The festival features elaborate pookalam (flower carpet) designs at doorsteps, the grand Onasadya feast served on banana leaves with over 26 dishes, Vallam Kali (snake boat races) on the backwaters, Pulikali (tiger dance) performances, and Kaikottikali (clap dance) by women. Thiruvonam, the most important day, falls in the Malayalam month of Chingam (August-September).
Spiritual Significance
Onam celebrates the ideal of just and prosperous governance as embodied by King Mahabali. Despite being an Asura, Mahabali's righteousness earned him a place in the hearts of his people forever. The festival teaches that true greatness lies in generosity, justice, and love for one's people.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who was King Mahabali?
King Mahabali (also called Maveli) was a benevolent Asura king and grandson of Prahlada. His reign in Kerala was considered a golden age — there was no poverty, crime, or inequality, and everyone lived in harmony. The gods, threatened by his growing power and popularity, asked Lord Vishnu to intervene. Vishnu took the form of Vamana (a dwarf Brahmin) and asked for three paces of land. When Mahabali agreed, Vamana grew to cosmic size and covered the earth and sky in two steps, pushing Mahabali to the netherworld with the third.
What is Onasadya?
Onasadya is the traditional grand feast served on Thiruvonam day, consisting of 26 or more vegetarian dishes arranged on a banana leaf in a specific order. It includes rice, sambar, rasam, avial, olan, kalan, pachadi, thoran, payasam (kheer), banana chips, and many more. The feast is eaten while seated on the floor and represents the abundance of King Mahabali's era. Each dish has a designated position on the banana leaf, and the meal follows a specific sequence of courses.
Why is Onam special even though Mahabali was an Asura?
Onam teaches a profound lesson that righteousness transcends labels. Although Mahabali was an Asura (demon) by birth, his governance was so just, generous, and beloved that even Lord Vishnu acknowledged his greatness by granting him the boon of visiting his people annually. The festival celebrates the idea that dharma (righteousness) and good character matter more than one's origins. Kerala's people honor Mahabali not despite being an Asura, but because his rule embodied the highest ideals of leadership.
